Non-agricultural diversification, mobile phone adoption and income in rural Mexico

  • Marlen Martinez,

Abstract

This paper studies the relationship between participation in non-agricultural employment and the adoption of mobile telephony in the rural sector of Mexico. With data from the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH 2016), the impact of participation in non-agricultural work on mobile phone adoption is analyzed, using a probit model of endogenous selection. Likewise, the joint effect of work in non-agricultural activities and cell phone use on family income is examined using a control function model. The results show that the foray into the non-agricultural sector increases the probability of using the mobile. Similarly, work in activities outside the field, as well as the adoption of a cell phone increase household income.
