Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the process of capital accumulation in peripheral economies, foundation of unequal development on a world scale. Starting from a political economy approach, and from the assumption that surplus productive capacity is lower in the
periphery, issues such as dependency for the import of capital assets, depreciation of real exchange rates, interest rates, price deflators and monetary volatility are highlighted. These factors ultimately put pressure on the ratios of capital composition, which limit the level of the profit rate and, by extension, they constitute an objective foundation to press for greater inequality in the distribution of income.
